Elegy

The Elegy inspired me. I was thinking about my time on the Cross-Country team. I love this poem and enjoyed writing it. Following the rules was a bit difficult. I changed lines in the poem to make it flow.

Running Away with my Heart

As I heard the shot of the gun

My heart was racing, my blood pumping

The race had begun, it would be my last

I don’t think about anything

It is as if my mind goes clear

My feet feel like they are fire

I see the finish line, I hear the cheers

The last cross country race of my high school career

I can already feel the tears

As I look to see my teammates running to me

This cannot be it, it cannot be my time

I do not want to leave this team I call mine

Each day at practice they make my heart shine

As captain, I am the leader

I do not want to miss out on the laughs

All the adventures we have had

It is like a mother leaving her child

I am leaving this team, I call family

I have seen all grown from the beginning

Just starting out, not knowing what we were getting into

Apart of something bigger than myself

I knew I was making a difference someway somehow

My time on the team has ended

But the memories will live on for forever

Leading the team with my fellow captains

Who I will always and forever love

I say goodbye with a tear in my eyes

But a heart warm full of love

Because this team, this family, these people

Know I am always cheering from afar as I say goodbye
